The Glass Nickel Pizza Co. on Madison's east side employs three hybrid cars in its delivery fleet. Madison west has one. You may have seen our Honda Civic hybrid, with its distinctive paint job, or our less conspicuous Toyota Prius around town on deliveries. These cars are great for stop and go city driving as their engines shut off completely when at idle to conserve fuel. Once the gas pedal is pressed, the cars move under electric power until the need for power requires the engine to turn on. Furthermore, these cars are capable of recharging their batteries simply by using the brakes. The potential energy stored in the moving vehicle is converted to potential energy in the batteries, to be used later for accelerating.
